Course Details

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

This course applies to all persons who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

It is recommended, by the Australian Resuscitation Council, that a CPR refresher program is undertaken every 12 months and your first aid qualification is updated every 3 years.

Specific licensing/regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

Course Registration

To register for this course, please contact me via the contact form on the website. I will let you know when the next course is scheduled and send you a link to register for the course.

During registration, you will be asked to provide your Unique Student Identifier (USI) number. If you do not have a USI number, you can create one for free at www.usi.gov.au.

You will also be required to provide your government name, date of birth, and gender. This must match what is on your USI account.

This information will not be shared or used for any purpose other than to issue your Statement of Attainment on successful completion of the course.

You can also provide your preferred name which will be used during the course.

Location and types of Training

I offer both blended and face-to-face delivery for this course. The location is determined by students needs, however it is primarily delivered in community spaces near Brunswick, Victoria.

Blended training

This course can be taught as a blended option where theory is completed online before the course and we deliver the practical in-person.

Full face to face training

All training including theory and practical is conducted in-person with no pre-course learning.

Prerequisites

To complete this course, students must be able to demonstrate the following foundation skills:

  • Reading and writing - A learner will be able to read, comprehend and write a range of texts within a variety of contexts.
  • Oral communication - A learner will be able to use and respond to spoken language including some unfamiliar material within a variety of contexts.
  • Digital literacy - A learner will be able to use a variety of digital devices and their applications/programs/software within a variety of contexts.

If student is under 18 years old at the time of training a Parent / Guardian Consent form needs to be downloaded, printed and signed by the Parent / Guardian and brought to the course by the student.

Statement of Attainment

On successful completion of the course and verification of your USI Number, you will receive a PDF by email with a nationally-recognised Statement of Attainment attached, showing you have fulfilled the requirements of HLTAID011 Provide First Aid.

Course cost

All courses are run on a pay-what-you-can basis.
To support course sustainability, I recommend a contribution of $60 per student to help cover materials and administration, however my break-even point is $30.
No one will be turned away from the course if they are unable to contribute, so please contribute what you can afford.

What should I wear?

It is a requirement of this course that a practical demonstration of CPR is performed for 2 minutes on the floor, so please, wear clothes that will enable you to complete this requirement.

Course Duration

Blended option (theory is completed online before attending the course and the practical training on the day of the course)

The online pre-course theory component on average takes students up to 4-5 hours to complete, some students take more time, some less time.

6 hours is allowed for the face to face or classroom component, but if the group is experienced in first aid this could take less time.

Full Face to face option (no pre-course learning, all training and assessment on the day of the course)

This option is only for people who have a current HLTAID011 Provide First Aid qualification who are looking to renew their qualification, duration is up to 8 hours.

Pre-Course Learning

Once you have registered for your course, a link will be emailed to you to activate your account and access the online pre-course theory.

This takes most students approximately 4-5 hours to complete and should be completed prior to attending the face-to-face component of the course.

There is no limit to the number of attempts at the online quizzes and no fee for additional attempts.

Students must have a digital device i.e. computer, tablet or smart phone with access to the internet to complete the pre-course learning online.

Assessment Methods

You will be assesed on your ability to complete the following skills:

  • Manage an unconscious, breathing casualty, including appropriate positioning to reduce the risk of airway compromise
  • Manage an unconscious, non-breathing adult, including:
    • Performing at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor
    • Following the prompts of an automated external defibrillator (AED) to deliver at least one shock
    • Demonstrating a rotation of single rescuer operators with minimal interruptions to compressions
    • Responding appropriately in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
  • Complete 2 minutes of CPR on the floor, using an infant manikin
  • Manage a paitent with anaphylaxis
  • Manage a paitent with asthma
  • Manage a paitent with non-life-threatening bleeding
  • Manage a paitent who is choking
  • Manage a paitent with envenomation, using pressure immobilisation
  • Manage paitents with fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, using appropriate immobilisation techniques
  • Manage a paitent with minor wound (cleaning and dressing)
  • Manage a paitent with nosebleed
  • Manage a paitent with shock

You will also complete a first aid scenario. I will observe these as you demonstrate the required skills and knowledge. When the scenarios are completed, you will complete a incident report on the scenario you have completed.

The pre-course online learning assessment comprises multiple choice, true or false as well as click and drag questions.
